The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) strongly deplores the murderous assault on a lady staff, Santosh Kumari in the Saroli branch of Canara Bank in Surat by the police constable, Ghanshyam.
On June 22 evening, the police constable demanded the updating of his pass book. The printing machine in the bank was out of order. As the working hours were over, he was requested to come the next day. He flew into a rage and using foul language and abuses, he attacked the lady staff. He entered the staff cubicle and attacked Santoshi. He hit and slapped her and pushed her so hard that she fell down and fractured her spine. He also hit the other bank officer on duty.
The bank manager is on leave since March 23 and the bank is at present run by only the lady staff and one another officer. There is no security guard in this branch of Canara bank.
Santoshi must be given the best of treatment and her entire medical expenses of must be borne by the bank management.
The assaulter Ghanshyam has only been suspended. AIDWA demandshis immediate arrest and stern criminal action against him.
Bank karmacharis have been working in very difficult conditions created by the lockdown. Even lactating mothers and pregnant women are not given relaxation and have to attend duties in their banks. They have to find their own transport for reaching the bank making it extremely difficult for many of the bank staff. Hence most of the branches are running with skeletal staff. AIDWA also demands that banks karmacharis must be given adequate safeguards.
